Ciao, Maestro

Sunday 12/27/2009 8:58 AM

We invited several close friends to a farewell gathering (over the BEST pizza in Montenegro) at Maestro, across the street from our apartment building. It was the perfect way to spend our last night in Podgorica. We managed to secure a table big enough for the adults and once everyone arrived, we were able to take over a table for the kids, too. Alex got a chance to hang out with almost all of the kids he'd gotten to know over our stay, I was able to spend time with the adult friends all at once, and we all got our fill of Maestro's house pizza. Here's a photo of one of the pizzas the group consumed (Jill took this photo):

The cake that Valentina made for Alex:

Valentina (Baker and Chef Extraordinaire) and Chris D (Best Friend, Mentor, and Guide to All Things Montenegrin):

Jill (Back-Up Photographer and Divine Hostess, aka She Who Makes Her Own Tortillas), Anica (American Corner Diva), and Chris W (He Who Finds Turkey in Montenegro):

Another photo Jill took of the kids' table when it was just four of them (l to r: Christina, Chris D's daughter; Alex; Danilo, Valentina's son; Christian, Jill and Chris W's son):

And the kids' table when it was a little more crowded (l to r: Branka and Danka, Danilo's sisters; Julia, Christina's sister; Christina; Una, Anica's daughter; Alex):

And one of my favorite photos of the night: Anica showing Una the gas lamp on the table:

Later on, we met up with Emile to say our goodbyes to him, and then it was off to bed to rest up for the long journey ahead of us. I can't think of a better way to spend our last night in Montenegro than by surrounding ourselves with the friends who helped make our time there so memorable. The next morning, we headed to the airport, and both of us were a little melancholy about it -- even Alex. So here are final photos of us in Montenegro:
