Snow in the P.O.D.

Saturday 12/19/2009 8:39 AM

We have SNOW! In Podgrica! Evidently, this hardly ever happens, and my friend Chris says this is the most accumulation she's seen since she moved here four years ago! It snowed yesterday morning, but it didn't stick to anything except car windows and tree branches, and even that melted after an hour or so. You can barely see it falling in this photo from yesterday:

And shortly after it stopped snowing, a small brass band (!) showed up in our courtyard, playing music and encouraging people on balconies to toss euros down to them. I thought maybe they were celebrating the first snowfall, but they came back this morning. Thankfully, they don't appear until after 10:00.

Today, though, we had snow all morning, and this time it stuck ... though they are calling for rain this afternoon, so it might all disappear before dark. So after I had some coffee, I ran downstairs to get some photos. Alex was still in bed, so I intended to only go out on our street for pictures, but then I walked through the courtyard on the back side of the building, and then I figured I might as well go to the park between our apartment and the US embassy. So here's the footage. Our favorite pizza place, Maestro, across the street from our building ... in SNOW:

And Bulevar Revolucije, the road between our apartment building and the park that leads to the embassy ... in SNOW:

Djecija Ulica, the pedestrian "road" that leads through the park ... in SNOW:

This is just about when I realized that my ungloved hands were getting red and numb and remembered that snow is not only pretty, but cold and wet, and I wasn't exactly dressed for sloshing my way through it. So I headed back. Here is a bench near our building ... in SNOW:

And finally, from our balcony a little later, Bulevar Revolucije again ... in SNOW:

And that tree which started this post ... in today's SNOW:

And now it's already starting to melt so it's getting especially sloppy outside, which is just as well: today we have to start the sad process of packing up our lives for the trip home (we fly out on Wednesday morning).
