The 31 Pound Thanksgiving

Friday 11/27/2009 4:58 PM

Though Alex had the day off from online school, I had to teach on Thanksgiving. Our new friends, The Willekes, an ex-pat family we met at the American Corner, made a trip back to the States about a month ago and returned with supplies for the feast's side dishes, but over the last few weeks, there's been an on-going saga about their attempts to acquire a turkey. Luckily, one of their neighbors put them in contact with a local farmer, and after a trip out to his place, Chris returned with a 31 pound turkey (the smallest one on the property, according to the farmer). So Chris and Jill (and their son, Christian) invited about 10 people over to their place for the feast, and we were included in the 10! Here's the pre-food table:

The monster turkey once Chris heaved it to the table:

And the full spread as we were sitting down to eat:

Chris carved the turkey as Jill explained to the Montenegrin guests the meaning of Thanksgiving:

After dinner, Alex retreated with to Christian's room to play games on the computer (from the look on Alex's face, I was clearly butting in on guy time):

Jill finally had a chance to relax with (amazingly good) pecan and pumpkin pie ... very well-deserved, after getting up at 4 am to cook the monster turkey:

It was a great Thanksgiving with delicious food and wonderful company ... many thanks to the Willekes for including us in the festivities. Jill even wrapped up a big container of left-overs for Emile, who had to teach in Cetinje until evening. He came over to our place after he got back to town so he could enjoy a reheated feast and play with Legos with Alex and me. Overall, it was a much more festive Thanksgiving that I thought we'd find in eastern Europe, which is very fitting for a year that's given us so much to be thankful for.
