So Alex and I had a busy day today. It seems John McCain is holding a rally at the Otterbein athletic center tomorrow, which inspired us to join the pro-Obama group in the Homecoming Parade this morning. We bought our matching "Organizing Otterbein for Obama" tshirts yesterday, made our signs last night, and made it up to campus way too early for a Saturday morning to march behind the band. Photos exist of the group, but I didn't bring my camera. I'm assuming they'll appear on Facebook eventually, and then I can post them here, but for now, here's one of our signs:
In case you can't make it out in the photo, Alex's has a sad face saying "Keep the woar going?" and a happy face saying "End the woar."
After we came home, I started raking leaves, which threatened to be far less fun, until Alex and Dylan (his friend from a couple houses down) started helping. I felt a little Tom Sawyerish when they asked if I would make a big pile for them to play in and I answered that they could help rake them into a pile and then play ... and they actually TOOK THE BAIT. They helped rake the last half of the yard and we ended up with a decent-sized pile from those leaves. Here are a few action shots of Alex jumping in:
And then the landing, which was much less fun, even though I warned them that the ground was hard underneath the pile:
And Dylan's first landing:
The boys posing in the leaf chairs they made:
And Alex raking the pile back into shape (note: Dylan is not actually pigeon-toed, though it looks like he is in the photo):
And after Dylan went home, I got a few shots of Alex reclining:
The full stretch:
But I like this one best, especially after the parade today, especially since when Alex and I were walking back to our car afterwards, through the heart of historically Republican Westerville, still carrying our signs, a senior citizen (probably an Otterbein alum) actually muttered "Terrorists" as he passed us on the sidewalk:
More soon ... the leaves on our trees have barely started falling (these were all the ones that blew over from the neighbor's yard), and we're taking our signs to the McCain rally tomorrow in an effort to not have Otterbein portrayed as a pro-McCain school in the local press. (And for the record, Otterbein's not endorsing either candidate: McCain was not invited. The Republicans are paying quite a bit to rent out the space and pay the overtime hours for campus security and Westerville PD.)
