Ike Comes to Ohio

In case you haven't heard, what was left of Ike blew through Ohio a week ago today with 75+ mph winds. I just typed a much longer blog entry about it, but lost it when I hit a wrong button at the end. So the short version is this:
- we (along with millions of other Ohioans) lost electricity in the storm on Sunday afternoon;
- most of Columbus was in the dark for at least 2-3 days;
- as of Thursday afternoon, we have electricty in 1/3 of the outlets in our house (evidently the lines connecting our house to the grid came loose in the storm);
- the electric company has no estimated time of repair for our lines because they're still focusing on getting grids powered up again;
- we have no phone, internet, or cable, and our service provider also has no estimated time of repair yet because the damage from the storm is so wide-spread;
- after the first day or so, we started to enjoy candle-lit baths, broken-branch bonfires in the driveway, and not having the TV on in the evening;
- we're glad we don't live in Galveston or Houston.
So I took some photos of damage to trees on our block. The one at the top of this page is of a tree a couple of houses away ... now pegged, I think, to be taken all the way down. This next one is in front of our next-door neighbor's house.
This had been the tallest tree on our block:
Nearly half the trees lining our street just snapped in half:
And when they didn't, they dropped branches all around:
The tree we watched most closely in our front yard miraculously, it seems, only dropped a few "twigs" (compared to the damage in other people's frontyards):
We had more significant issues in the backyard, but I didn't get photos before we cleaned up.
