Stonebridge CSA

Saturday 06/28/2008 12:25 AM

I've sort of lost track of days, so I'm going to post by location.  These first batches of photos are from Stonebridge CSA (that's Community Supported Agriculture), the farm where the digital storytelling workshop is held. It's a 10-acre organic farm. People can buy shares of the farm annually in exchange for a share of the crop, or (and this is the really cool and unique part of it) they can barter labor (four hrs/week) in exchange for shares. But it's more than a farm ... they've converted a hog barn into the "sunflower room," which is where the workshop actually takes place.  When they aren't making digital stories in there, they screen movies, hold concerts, etc. for farm members. Enough about the CSA part of the farm, though ... if you want to know more about it, see the link of the day.

I'm going to try not to bother with captions because I'm assuming you know a bridge (there are a couple of streams -- or one twisting stream -- that run through the property) or a goat when you see one, and I'm not going to pretend that I know all the names of flowers and stuff.

OK ... so here's a caption ... this is one of the many structures on the farm property, and if I'm remembering it correctly, this was once a chicken house.

They grow plants you can eat too, but frankly, they aren't as pretty as the flowers.

This, I hear, is the mean goat.

The plates we've been eating off all week are the exact same pattern my mom had when I was a kid. It was kinda freaky to see them again.

And this deserves comment too: it's the floor in the sunflower room, and it's made of wooden blocks. Remember that this was a hog barn, right? The floor was originally peaked in the middle so they could spray it clean with a hose and when they renovated it, they cut blocks from wood remnants to level it out (so in the middle the blocks are a couple of inches deep and at the edges they are more like four or five inches deep). Which I evidently thought (and still think) was cool enough to take a picture of.

I just realized that it probably seems as if I'm the only person on the farm so in the next post, I'll show you some of the people in the workshop.
