Florida - Take One

Friday 06/20/2008 6:57 PM

Alex and I have been in Florida for almost two weeks. He's been visiting Uncle Peter and Aunt Candy, and I've been grading AP English exams (the exams high school students take to get college credit for their senior English classes) in Daytona Beach.  Now I'm back in Tallahassee with Alex, Peter and Candy, and while I don't have a single photo from my time in Daytona, I have several to share from other parts of the trip so far.

First, a mural in Coolidge, Georgia, which I realized I remembered as soon as I saw it. Even though I've never really visited this town, I've driven past this building at least a couple dozen times in my life, since it's on the route between I-75 and Tallahassee. So I was equally surprised to find that (1) I recalled the sign in an eerie deja vu sort of way, and (2) that it still exists:

A photo Alex took as we cruised into Florida at a cool 70 (or so) mph:

When I was coming back from Daytona, I stopped in Cassadaga, a "spiritualist camp and healing community." My friend, Ian, suggested it would be an interesting place to grab lunch and wander around (his mom works here when she isn't visiting him in China).  There wasn't much terrain to wander in, and I did not get healed, but I did collect a few postcards and photos:

Ian asked me to go, specifically, to the Purple Rose (and to ask for a specific psychic if I wanted a reading) ... I didn't do the reading, but since Ian's in China now, I thought it would be appropriate to include a photo of the Rose:

Once I made it back to Tallahassee, I found Freya (our dog who Peter and Candy were taking care of, in addition to Alex) had become fast friends with CJ (a boxer-greyhound mix Peter and Candy have been foster-parenting for the last several months):

Alex has been at pottery camp all week, which allowed Peter and me a chance to visit the shops in Havana (FL, that is: think antiques, instead of cigars). I only took one photo there, titled, "Pimpin It In Havana":

Today was Alex's last day of pottery camp, so Peter and I picked him up early in order to admire his creations and take some photos of the place. Here is Peter pushing Alex on the swing, a centerpiece of the pre-dropoff experience every morning, as far as I can tell:

Now, you see why the pushoff was so important:

But we're here for pottery, right? So here is Alex with his teacher, "Mr. Matt" (everyone tie-dyed tshirts with red clay from Georgia):

And here is Alex, displaying his wares in the studio:

And, of course, the all-important kiln:

A pretty shed at Cornerstone Learning Community (the school where the camp was held), and what drew me toward the shed in the first place:

That's about it so far. Alex wants to take a historical tour of Tallahassee tomorrow to see what's left of the neighborhood where Peter and I grew up, the schools we went to, etc. And then we're going to the pool for the afternoon.  On Sunday, I head out for a workshop in Colorado while Alex stays with Peter and Candy for another eight days.
