I'm in London again and too tired to post with photos, though I have a lot of catching up to do in the next couple of days. I need to post a correction, though: Hilda did not live in the house pictured in "Veteli-Part Two." Antti, Anja and I were so busy traveling that he didn't get a chance to look at the recent blog postings until after I was on my way to Timo and Nina's house near Helsinki. Antti called to let me know that the old house I photographed was not the one that Hilda lived in, though Antti's uncle (Juhani Bjorkbacka) did.
This makes a lot more sense to me for a number of reasons that I'm too tired to get into right now.
Okay, the first reason is that the house I photographed is only a few meters from the site of Hilda's old house, and when I thought it was Hilda's house, I couldn't figure out why it was moved off its foundation in the first place ... so of course it wasn't the house that once stood so close to where it is now. If that's confusing for you, it's my fault ... blame it on sleepiness.
The photos I will post tomorrow -- of the restored rooms at Eeva's place -- are in fact from the house that Hilda lived in with Antti and Brita Maija, the house that no longer exists. I've already corrected those earlier blog postings about Veteli, but I thought I should include this correction post too.
But before I sign off, I need to say thanks yet again to Antti and Anja for being such wonderful hosts during my visit. And to Timo and Nina for providing me with a sauna, a bed and a glass (or two) of cognac on my last night in Helsinki, a phone to use throughout my time in Finland, rides from the train station and to the airport, and some excellent tips for how to spend my last day in Finland. And of course to Mika and Sari for the warm welcome at the start of my Finnish journey. Visiting family along the way made the trip so much easier and more memorable than my Lonely Planet: Finland travel guide ever could. I hope I can return the hospitality in the States one day.
