Veteli - Part Two

Tuesday 08/07/2007 1:09 PM (In Finland: 8:09 PM)

I've fallen behind in posts ... I'm still on Sunday, and it's now Tuesday.  I'm taking the train to Helsinki tomorrow, will stay the night at Timo & Nina's place, and then fly back to London on Thursday.  Anja, Antti and I went to Turku today, but I'll post those photos and more from my time here in Finland after I get back to London.  For today, it's more photos of the old house in Veteli.

First, I saw the place where the house my great-grandmother, Hilda, lived in once stood. Evidently there are still stones from the foundation here, but since it's summer, we couldn't see those. So here is that site:

And here is the view of the fields from that site:

Right next to this site is most of another old house in the family (Antti's uncle, Juhani Bjorkbacka, lived here). It's not in any condition to live in, but we were able to go inside (though not up to the second floor). Here's the grand tour ... you've already seen the front door, but here is the front of the house:

And here is a scythe hanging on the outside of the house:

Here is what's left of the staircase leading up to the second floor (you see why we didn't try to get up there):

Here is one of the living room or dining room windows:

A coat hook (OK, so I was a little obsessed with the details):

The cooking area -- bread oven, fireplace, and stove:

Here, you can see the cooking stove and oven a little better:

Here is a close up of the bread oven:

A kitchen cupboard:

A kitchen window:

And above this window, a bread rack:

There were also three bedrooms on this floor, but there wasn't too much to see in them, so I didn't take photos.  After this visit, though, we had coffee with more relatives (I'll include them in a later post), and then we went to Eeva's house, where two of the bedrooms from the old house were relocated and restored. I'll post those photos tomorrow before I catch the train back to Helsinki.
