More Street Signs

Monday 07/23/2007 2:42 PM (In the United Kingdom: 7:42 PM)

Because the Circle and District lines of the Underground were closed for maintenance this weekend, and because those were the two lines essential to my journeying on Sunday, I did a lot more walking than I'd planned, even though I had a lot of walking planned.  They were enjoyable walks, for the most part, and I got a few more pictures of streetsigns along the way:

A fancy City of London marker ... according to our boat guide, City of London is only one square mile, and it is the only place in Great Britain that requires the queen to ask permission to enter.  He also said it is the richest (or was it most expensive?) city in all of Europe, and I suppose he's a better authority on the matter than I am, but that seems little suspicious to me. I mean, in ALL of Europe?

So I figured out pretty easily that "Public Convenience" is yet another British expression for "bathroom," but I still can't figure out what is up with the third icon.  And this isn't like my facade of confusion over "Circus" in an earlier post -- I really don't know what the horizontal figure is supposed to represent. It looks like the person's pants are down, and he/she is in a very uncomfortable position on the floor, right? What the hell is going on there? Needless to say, I didn't walk through the doorway to find out, but if anyone else knows, please send me an email.

This is just sad. There were several of these posted on the outside of what appeared to be an apartment complex. It looks so grainy because I snapped the photo from across the street and I had to blow it up quite a bit for you to read.

Ummm ... I'm not sure what to say about this, so I won't say anything at all. But please know that I'm not armed with a sharpie and scrawling odd phrases on walls just to take pictures of them.

PS: A good friend was as intrigued but more motivated than I was to find out what the Alphabet of Brooke Shields is all about. She found a site that has 48 photos of similar signs ... it's the link of the day.  I dug a little deeper and learned that this message has been graffitied in lot of places around London, and then started showing up in other European towns and no one seems to know what it means ... tons of people have asked about it on google, and I even saw some news articles about the phenomenon.
