Bikers, Skaters, Nappers & Spammers

Monday 07/23/2007 6:26 PM (In the United Kingdom: 11:26 PM)

There was even more to see on the south bank of the Thames, but as far as I know, these folks weren't looking for handouts. There were a couple of teenagers doing tricks on their bikes on what I thought were modern art benches (and they might in fact be, though these guys discovered another purpose for them):

Alex, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME:

I probably should have snapped a shot of the entire bench at once. There were two of them that curved toward each other to make a ring, but each one twisted, sort of like individual DNA strands. The guy above had just biked up the side of the bench/wall and then off the top of it.  I repeat: Alex: do NOT try this at home (or at Uncle Peter's, or anywhere before you get your own medical insurance and start paying your own doctor bills).

Below is a photo of what's used as a skate park beneath the bridge (not the footbridge ... I think it was the Waterloo Bridge, but it might have been the Hungerford). The rest of the area was relatively clean of graffiti, and since the guy on the left is spraying some fresh paint on in broad eveninglight, I'm assuming the city has turned the space over to the skaters. I took more pictures (the space is at least twice as big as what you see here), but the light was too weird for them to turn out).

This guy was clearly not impressed at all with the action of Southbank:

I had to take his picture, since a friend has been urging me to nap in a park since before I arrived. I haven't done it yet, but was planning to ... until I saw how unsavory these folks look.  The one below is in Trafalgar Square, though I'm pretty sure he's passed out rather than sleeping ... I was worried at first that he might be dead, but I saw his belly move as he breathed:

See what a nice segue these guys provided? Now we're in Trafalgar Square, which was my next stop on my way home:

I waited 10 minutes and there was never a moment to snap a picture of a lion without someone on it, and there are 4 lions in the square.  There are also fountains and statues, but I didn't take pictures of them because:

In fact, I only took one more picture before I got home, and it's expressly for my dad. I don't know if he's a Monty Python fan at all (though I'm inclined to believe he probably isn't), but there is a musical on the Strand that's billed as Monty Python's Spamalot.  My dad is the biggest fan of Spam to ever walk the face of the earth, and the fact that the show is in the Palace Theatre made the picture just too good pass up:
