Absence Policy

You are allowed two (2) free absences from class. I do not necessarily need to know why you were absent on these days, but it would be a good idea to save them for emergencies, illnesses, and any planned events which will require you to miss class. You are always responsible for turning assignments in on time and keeping up with reading assignments, no matter why you are absent.

  • On your third absence, your final grade will be lowered one-third letter grade (an A will become an A-).
  • On your fourth absence, your final grade will be lowered another third (an A will become a B+).
  • On your fifth absence, you will fail the course (there is no need to return to class).

If you arrive in class more than a half hour late, you will be marked absent for the day ... even if you show up later and stick around.

Turning Papers In

Papers (including study questions, reflection papers, and annotated bibliographies) should be submitted in class on the day they are due. All papers should be typed, double-spaced. Papers may be turned in up to 48 hours after their due date, with the following grade penalties:

  • for each study question response turned in within 48 hours of its due date, your cumulative Study Question grade for the term will be lowered one-third letter grade (an A will become an A-)
  • grades on presentations will be reduced one-third letter grade for students who turn in their reflection papers within 48 hours of its due date (no more than one week after your presentation)

Should you miss class when an assignment is due, you may email it to me as a Word attachment. The same deadlines and grace periods apply when emailing assignments. No papers will be accepted more than 48 hours after it is due.

Evaluation

The work you complete in this class will contribute to your final grade as follows:

Quizzes
20%
Study Question Responses
25%
Presentation & Paper
25%
Final Project
30%

Your final grade may also be affected by excessive absences, poor class participation, or repeatedly turning in late assignments.

Plagiarism

You have engaged in plagiarism if you have claimed someone else's (published or not) work as your own. Not only is the practice illegal, I find it downright slimy. As a writer and a teacher of writing, I can't help but feel personally insulted by such attempts. If I catch you in the act, I will fail you for the course and report the incident to university.
